First and foremost I play this game to have fun. The question becomes, how much SP does it require to have fun? My answer to that is, not a lot. The sheer diversity of tasks in this game is the source of great frustration for me. As I've said many times, "Indecision may or may not be my problem." That is to say, there's so many different things to do my problem isn't the ability to do them, it's managing my play time, and training time since I can't do everything at once.
This, to most people, is hardly a bad thing. For one such as myself, the indecisive, it means I have a whole lot of SP in a whole lot of areas without true specialization in any one thing. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. When I get online I can go exploring, I can mine, I can run missions, I can manage my research agent, or I can join my corp in various PvP activities. IÆm at just over 15 million SP, and that is what lets me do all of the above reasonably well.
You may be wondering how in the world that answers your questions! The fact of the matter is that of the many things I can do with my character, there is only a limited amount of that 15 mil sp that applies, directly or indirectly, to any one of the tasks. Any new player could easily surpass me in any one of my favored activities in a matter of months, possibly sooner depending on their determination and focus. I have a friend who is just starting the game and because of the new starting skills he already has more SP in both Gunnery and Missiles than I do now. Granted, IÆve neglected those two facets of my overall skill tree for the most part, quite intentionally in fact.
The point is that in short order heÆll be able to smack me down should we ever face off Frigate vs. Frigate. In a matter of weeks he could be in an Assault Frigate that could very likely take down my Ishkur (not the best AF, but my favored one due to my drone skills). I have my fun doing several different things in this game, and CCP has a habit of adding new facets to the game all the time.
